What makes a voice attractive?
Mostly four things you can measure: a smooth tone (a harmonics-to-noise ratio of 12 dB or better), a melody that moves 3–6.5 semitones, a warm spectral balance with 35–75% of the voice’s energy in the low chest band, and an unhurried pace with real pauses — 18–35% of total time silent. Attractiveness itself is partly subjective and depends on context. Resonate does score vocal attractiveness — it is one of the six perception scores — but the score reads the acoustic profile listeners consistently rate appealing in studies, not the attraction itself. Each ingredient of that profile has a research-derived band you can compare your own voice against, and the measured voices below tend toward the bands rather than ticking every one.
Is vocal attractiveness measurable at all?
Partly: ratings of the same voice shift with context, culture and who is listening, but the voices widely described as appealing tend toward the same four acoustic ingredients — a harmonics-to-noise ratio above 12 dB, pitch that moves 3–6.5 semitones, 35–75% of energy in the low chest band, and 18–35% of total time spent in real pauses. Vocal attractiveness is one of Resonate’s six perception scores, and it reads exactly that: how closely a voice matches the acoustic profile listeners consistently rate appealing in studies — the profile, not the attraction itself.

What makes a voice sound smooth?
A harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) of 12 dB or more, jitter under 2.5% and shimmer under 9% — that is what “smooth” means acoustically: mostly clean harmonic tone rather than breath noise, with almost no micro-wobble in pitch or volume from one vocal cycle to the next.
Smoothness is the ingredient people usually mean when they say a voice “sounds good” without being able to say why. And the floor is hard to hit in real recordings: Judi Dench, a voice regularly described as effortlessly commanding, reads 11.9 dB — brushing the 12 dB floor from just below, partly a matter of recording conditions. Smoothness readings punish breathiness and strain, and they reward breath support more than anything else you can train.
Why do monotone voices sound flat?
Engaging speakers move their pitch across roughly 3–6.5 semitones as they talk; below about 1.5 semitones a voice reads as monotone. Melody is where interest lives — pitch that genuinely rises and falls on the words that matter is the difference between a voice people listen to and one they endure.
The rare trick is melody and depth at once. Alan Rickman measures 6.5 semitones of pitch variability — the very top of the optimal band — over a 95 Hz median: the famously languid slide is, acoustically, a deep voice that never stops moving. Most deep voices go the other way and flatten out.
Do deeper voices sound more attractive?
Often, for male voices: listener studies tend to rate lower pitch as more appealing, and the male voices in our library most often called pleasant sit low — Alan Rickman’s median pitch is 95 Hz, Morgan Freeman’s 112 Hz, against the optimal band of 100–150 Hz (the typical adult-male range runs roughly 85–155 Hz). But depth is not just pitch: warmth also needs 35–75% of the voice’s energy in the 0–500 Hz chest band and a spectral balance between −22 and −8 dB. For female voices the studies point elsewhere — melody and clarity rate higher than depth.
You can’t safely force your pitch much lower than it is, and faking depth reads as exactly that. Resonance is the trainable part — where in the body the sound vibrates, not how low the note is. Does speaking slower make a voice sound better?
Unhurried delivery with real pauses does: Morgan Freeman reads at about 115 words per minute — below the 140–160 wpm conversational band — and Alan Rickman spends about 19% of his total time silent, inside the 18–35% pause band. Rushing is what undoes a pleasant tone: the pauses are where a voice’s sound actually registers with a listener.

Most of these six miss at least one band — the interview and phone recordings they were measured from drag HNR down hard — and that is the point of the table: what listeners respond to is the combination and the delivery, not a voice ticking every box.

Pace is estimated while talking — heavy pausers’ overall, pauses-included rate runs lower — so the 140–160 wpm band isn’t shown against that column.
Can one good number make a voice attractive?
No — the second-highest smoothness reading in our 30-voice library, 14.3 dB HNR, belongs to Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson. The highest, 14.5 dB, is Christopher Walken. Single metrics don’t make a voice appealing; the combination, and the delivery it’s put to, do.
This is the limit of any single reading. Cartwright’s signal is a professional instrument in superb trim — clean harmonics, steady pitch, twenty years of Bart without a scratch — and Walken’s is the most impersonated cadence in movies, admired far more often than it’s called soothing. Smoothness is a foundation, not a destination: what listeners respond to is the full combination, delivered well.
How do I make my own voice more attractive?
Measure first. A 20-second reading gives you the same numbers as the table above, and the one or two readings furthest from their bands are where work pays off: smoothness below 12 dB points to breath support, melody under 3 semitones to pitch drills, pauses under 18% to pacing. Training an ingredient you already have changes nothing a listener can hear.

The limits, honestly: every example here comes from one real recording per voice — interviews and broadcasts, not lab conditions — and recording quality moves some readings. The bands are research-derived ranges for engaging speech in general; the vocal-attractiveness score built on them reads the profile listeners rate appealing, not the attraction itself. And no acoustic profile makes a voice objectively attractive: listeners disagree, culture and context weigh in, and the same voice lands differently telling a story and running a meeting. What measurement gives you is the profile — the part of the impression you can actually train.
