How do I sound more confident and authoritative?
Four readings separate voices people call commanding: a settled pitch floor (the deepest median in our library is 89 Hz), an unhurried pace (the slowest we have measured is 112 wpm), deliberate silence (the optimal band is 18–35% of speaking time), and a steady signal (jitter under 2.5%). Only the first is anatomy. The other three are delivery, and delivery is trainable.
Does a deep voice matter for authority?
Some — the two deepest voices in our library, Samuel L. Jackson and Walter Cronkite, both sit on an 89 Hz median, under the 100–150 Hz male optimal band, and both are famous for command. But James Earl Jones, the most impersonated bass in cinema, measures a mid-band 129 Hz median in ordinary conversation: the reputation for extreme depth is partly performance, and depth is the one ingredient you can't train.
You cannot lower your anatomy, and no drill will give you Samuel L. Jackson’s larynx. What most tense speakers can do is stop squeezing above their own floor: stress pushes pitch up, so a “weak” voice is often a normal voice running high. A settled floor reads as calm because it is, literally, the sound of a throat not squeezing. If your average pitch sits high in your band, the fix is release — a yawn-sigh, a slow exhale before speaking — not force.
How fast should I speak to sound confident?
Slower than you think: the conversational optimum is 140–160 words per minute, and commanding voices sit low against it — Walter Cronkite, the slowest voice we have measured, reads 112 wpm in our voice library. Slow reads as unhurried, and unhurried reads as status: the person who doesn't rush is the person who expects to be heard out.
Morgan Freeman — the most imitated calm in narration — runs at 115wpm, dictation pace. Cronkite reads below the band’s 115wpm floor and Freeman sits right at it; the instrument’s own low flags land on their syllable rates — 2.8 and 2.9 syllables a second against a floor of 3. Do pauses make you sound more confident?
Yes — deliberate speakers spend 18–35% of their total time silent, in stops of 0.4–1 seconds, and it is the fastest fix on this page. A held pause signals confidence because it says you feel no pressure to fill the silence — which is exactly the thing a nervous speaker cannot do.
Freeman is the clean example: 18.6% of his measured interview is silence, across forty-six separate stops, and both pause readings land inside their optimal bands. The honest counterexample is Cronkite at 1.4% — measured from a 1993 radio interview, twelve years off the anchor desk, and still almost without a stop; the command rides on depth and pace instead. Why does my voice sound weak or shaky?
Because shakiness is physical and measurable: cycle-to-cycle pitch wobble (jitter) reads best under 2.5% in connected speech, moment-to-moment loudness variation belongs in a 3.5–8 dB band, and creak (vocal fry) under 8% of voiced frames. Cross those lines and listeners hear "nervous" long before they can name why.
The usual cause is breath, not character: speaking on empty lungs makes pitch wobble, sentence endings collapse into creak, and loudness trail away — the acoustic signature listeners file as “unsure.” All of it responds to support work. One caution before you diagnose yourself: jitter measured over connected speech runs higher than the clinical sustained-vowel thresholds, and phone or laptop recordings add more, so treat one bad reading as a prompt to re-record, not a verdict.
Should I speak in a low monotone to be authoritative?
No — this is the myth the data kills: the highest pitch variability we have measured belongs to James Earl Jones, at 7.7 semitones, with Patrick Stewart just behind at 7.3 st — the two most melodic voices in our library are both famous for command. Authority wants a settled floor, not a flat line.
The “speak in a low monotone” advice confuses the floor with the ceiling. James Earl Jones anchors low and swings 7.7 st above it — past the 3–6.5 st optimal band, not below it. Monotone can work: Cronkite measured 2.7st, under the band, and held a country’s trust — but that read is carried by depth and steadiness, and nothing in our data says flattening yourself is required. The highest authority reading in the library is Judi Dench at 9.8/10, delivered barely above a murmur with a mid-band 4.4 st of melody. Command is control, not flatness.

Note the spread: medians from 89 to 147 Hz, pace from 112 to 150 wpm, silence from 1.4 to 18.6%, melody from 2.7 to 7.7 st. There is no single authoritative setting. There are four levers, and each of these voices leans hard on a different one.
What none of this proves
We measured acoustics from specific recordings — often archival radio and interviews — not character. Cronkite was famously called the most trusted man in America; our instrument measured his sound, level and deep and even, not his honesty, and the two are not the same claim. Perception research links depth, steadiness and unhurried pacing to perceived authority on average; a reading inside every band is still no guarantee a particular room does what you say. And old transfers or phone-line audio inflate some readings, which is why every voice page carries its source and its caveats.
Measure before you train
Most people guess wrong about which lever is theirs. The gap between your own reading and the bands above tells you whether pace, pitch floor, pauses, or steadiness is the thing actually costing you — and working the wrong one wastes months.
