Churchill sits at the bottom of the library — so far. Before anyone writes in: listen to what was actually measured. These are the wartime speeches as Churchill himself re-recorded them in a studio in 1949 — and the constant crackle of that old record never lets the signal go properly quiet, so his celebrated pauses simply vanish into the noise. He is also the slowest talker we’ve measured yet. What the crackle can’t bury is the melody: a voice swinging through more than an octave as it builds. The 62 is a reading of an ageing record, not of the room in 1940 — and it stays on the page, because we don’t grade legends on a curve.
