The read

Hawking was offered newer, smoother synthesizers for years and always refused: the robotic DECtalk had become his voice, and he kept it. Measured like any other reading — and flagged as the machine it is — the famous monotone turns out not to be one: melodic range and variability both optimal, pause length optimal, the pause ratio a whisker under its band. None of that is the chip deciding. Hawking composed sentences in advance, word by word, and the synthesizer played the timing he authored — every stop deliberate in the most literal sense possible. The one miss is warmth, reading low: the synthesis, not the man. Pacing was the part of speech he still controlled, and it shows.

Steal this

the full stop

Even here, what the measurements endorse is the stopping — pauses that exist because they were, literally, written. Compose your next important point as if every pause had to be typed: decide where the stops go before you speak, then honour them at full length. A pause you planned reads as thought. A pause you fell into reads as losing the thread.

Questions about this voice

What makes Stephen Hawking’s voice distinctive?

The standout reading in Stephen Hawking’s measurement is 8.7 st melodic range: optimal — melody from a 1980s speech chip, timing authored word by word. A 2008 NASA lecture through his DECtalk synthesizer — measured like anyone else, flagged as what it is.

What can you learn from Stephen Hawking’s voice?

The measured strength worth stealing is “the full stop”. A matching drill of the same name is part of the Resonate training library.

How was Stephen Hawking’s voice measured?

Resonate ran a 150-second segment of a publicly available recording through the same acoustic analysis used for every voice in this library — 16 benchmarked readings on one shared scale, measured 2026-07-26. The exact source recording and any caveats are documented in the notes on this page; it’s a snapshot of one recording, not a verdict on a career.
